Amazing Grace

Submitted by Tashina Marker

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind but now I see

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come

'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer's ear
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds
And drives away his fear

Must Jesus bear the cross alone
And all the world go free?
No, there's a cross for ev'ryone
And there's a cross for me

I enjoy singing this song to my children. But I never knew the other verses.

I was listening & seeing the tragic damage that hurricane Katrina did tonight,and I found myself humming Amazing Grace. I did not realize the tune I was humming till after a while. Although you may find that a most inappropriate song to be humming at a time like this, considering it is mostly sung as a funeral song. I remembered the history behind this song & for those of you who are unaware of the history behind it, sing the words again after you read the story. Maybe it will shed a new view on this popular Christian song.

I do not remember all the details of the story, but here it is:

Back in the mid 1800's there was a captain of a ship. He was a man known to be evil hearted. He was such an unpleasant man that his ship mates threw him over broad one night. He was out there for 3 LOOOONG days. He was cold, thirsty, hungry, & very unsure of what was to happen to him & if you were to place yourself in his shoes you can imagine the fear that might enter his mind & add being all alone with hungry sharks all around you. Well a very ungodly man, turned to God & begged for forgiveness & help out of the situation he helped create. In the process of all this he composed the well known song Amazing Grace & as he was singing it on the 3rd day he sighted a ship in the distance who came to his rescue. He was a very changed & humbled man after this experience in his life & that's the over all story. A historian told it way better to me, but that was a while back & I can't remember all the details.

So I believe it should also be a song for the living. I have never thought myself to have a good voice, but from birth my baby sister in her worst of crying will stop to listen to me sing to her. She will fall a sleep to my humming or singing & as I was humming which lead to singing she calmly listened & snuggled close to me & it was like she felt the way I did about all this. Blessed or not with a voice I needed that sweet little girls comforting.( she is 9 months old.)
.........& grace will lead me home -Tashina

Beautiful words Tashina that you shared in giving us the background on Amazing Grace and more so in sharing the special times you have been so blessed to have with your baby sister.

That is so neat that though you are a young woman who could marry and have your own child in just a short time, you are now honing your mothering skills with your sibling. That's how it should be - no generational gaps, but a continuum.

Please keep singing to the Lord for your baby sister and our listening pleasure.

And Tashina, do you have the Holy Ghost?

Sincerely,

Here's even more verses:

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, Who called me here below,
Shall be forever mine.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

A very old hymnal I once used had 8 verses. But I've only been able to find 7.

Tashina, Thank you for pointing me to this site. I've enjoyed it.

actually there are 21 verses to this song. only 5 were penned by the original author. the rest have been slowly added over the years. they are:

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That sav’d a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

In evil long I took delight
Unawed by shame or fear;
'Til a new object met my sight,
And stopped my wild career.

I saw One hanging on a tree,
In agonies and blood;
Who fixed His languid eyes on me
As near His cross I stood.

Sure, never 'til my latest breath,
Can I forget that look
It seemed to charge me with His death
Though not a word He spoke.

My conscience owned and felt the guilt,
And plunged me in despair;
I saw my sins His blood had shed,
And helped to nail Him there.

Alas, I knew not what I did,
But all my tears were vain;
Where could my trembling soul be hid,
For I the Lord had slain!

A second look He gave that said;
“I freely all forgive” !
This blood is for my ramson paid,
“I died that thou mayest live.”

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev’d;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believ’d!

Because he died upon the cross,
He paid the price for me.
He bought my soul for his glo-ry,
And now he's set me free.

God opened heaven for me
His Son died for me
It is thanks to Jesus, my Savior
That I received my faith

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer's ear
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds
And drives away his fear

Amazing grace has set me free
To touch, to taste, to feel
The wonders of accepting love
Have made me whole and real.

Must Jesus bear the cross alone
And all the world go free?
No, there's a cross for ev'ryone
And there's a cross for me

Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promis’d good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

We all must lay our garments by
Upon our beds to rest
'though death may soon disrobe us all
Of what we now possess.

Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

Shall I be wafted to the skies
On flowery beds of ease
While others strive to win the prize
And sail on bloody seas

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call’d me here below,
Will be forever mine.

How long, dear Saviour, oh how long
Have I on earth to stay?
Roll on, roll on, ye wheels of time
And bring that joyful day.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’ve first begun.
